The Miami Hurricanes have many paths to the ACC Championship game, but they are all very narrow
The Miami Hurricanes kept their ACC and College Football Playoff hopes alive last Saturday with a 34-17 win over Virginia Tech on the road, improving to 9-2 (5-2) on the season. The good news? The Canes have a number of avenues to still reach Charlotte for the ACC Championship game.
With one week remaining, almost every conference title game spot is still up for grabs across the FBS. Whether the scenarios are complicated (looking at you, ACC, MAC and Mountain West) or simple (thank you, Sun Belt and Conference USA), there's a lot left to play for.
The Hurricanes also got the one piece of external help that had to happen — the Pittsburgh Panthers beating the No. 16 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 42-28 — to ensure they will enter the final week of the regular season still with a mathematical chance to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game on Dec. 6 in Charlotte.
Here are SMU’s ACC championship scenarios heading into its final regular-season game against California. SMU’s path to the ACC championship became far simpler after Georgia Tech’s loss. If the Mustangs beat California on Saturday, they will be one of the two teams in the conference’s championship game.
The Group of Five is no cakewalk either. Tulane and Navy can reach the American title game by winning out but North Texas can get in if it wins and Navy loses to either Memphis or Army. Tulane was the only Group of Five team in the committee's last rankings, so James Madison needs the Green Wave to lose in order to have a shot at the CFP.
Georgia Tech fell to No. 23 after a loss to Pitt, and the race to the ACC championship game became even messier. Oregon moved up to No. 5 and the race continues in the Group of Five.
