Gov. Kathy Hochul’s move to revive congestion pricing in New York has energized her Republican opponents, giving them fodder to fight her re-election in 2026.

Hochul has been under pressure from transit advocates, environmental groups and supportive lawmakers to revive the toll since she spiked it in June.

Congestion pricing is moving full speed ahead for a Jan. 5 start, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared Thursday – as critics blasted her for repeatedly touting “40%” in savings to a toll that never even kicked off in the first place.

The governor is renewing plans to start the tolling program, but at discounted rates. Ms. Hochul said it will generate $15 billion for mass transit.

Hochul announced the daytime toll for automobiles would be reduced from $15 to $9, calling it a 40% reduction that would save daily commuters nearly $1,500 annually.
