Alabama schools have begun to announce closures or delays for Monday as the state prepares for possible widespread severe weather starting Sunday night. NOAA forecasters have added a Level 3 out of 5 risk for southeast Alabama and have maintained a separate Level 3 risk for the northwest corner of the state.
A tornado touched down in western Jefferson County on Monday evening, but no tornado warning was issued at the time.
A warning means a storm has been spotted or detected on radar, whereas a watch means conditions are favorable for storms to develop. During a warning, there’s an immediate threat to life and property. Residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
The National Weather Service said “widespread” severe weather looks likely in Alabama starting Sunday night. Forecasters said damaging winds will be the main threat, “with the tornado threat not far behind it.
