President Donald Trump said Monday he is placing Washington, DC’s, police department “under direct federal control” and deploying National Guard troops to the nation’s capital, citing a public safety emergency after an assault on a former government worker.

At an extraordinary news conference on Monday, President Donald Trump revealed plans to take over the Washington, D.C. police department and deploy National Guard troops in the nation's capital to combat what he says is rampant violent crime that statistics show is actually decreasing.

"Well done, Mr. President, you're going to do for D.C. what you did for the border," the South Carolina Republican added.
