Rights groups say the “safe third country” plans unveiled Tuesday contravene EU values and will burden poorer nations. Under the bloc’s rules, people can be sent to countries deemed safe, but not to those where they face the risk of physical harm or persecution.
It remains unclear whether UK passport holders will be able to use e-gates at EU airports this summer. The EU Commission has told the BBC that UK citizens will not have access to them until a new scheme to enhance border security comes into force in October, and even then it is up to individual countries.
The sanctions mean any assets the three targeted activists - including a Russian associate of Kolbasnikova and Schlund - have inside the EU will be frozen, and they will be barred from entering any of the bloc's member countries.
