By Maya Gebeily BEIRUT, March 13 (Reuters) - Israel has rebuffed a historic offer of direct talks from Lebanon, deeming it too little too late from a government that shares its goal of disarming Hezbollah but cannot act against the heavily armed Lebanese group without risking a civil war.
It comes after Lebanese authorities said an overnight Israeli strike killed 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses working at a healthcare center in the southern town of Burj Qalawiya, following another strike on the town of Sawaneh that left two paramedics affiliated with Hezbollah and its ally Amal dead.
Almost two weeks into the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, the conflict in Lebanon is quickly escalating and expanding into more regions of the country. It began after the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel,
“They're sleeping on the street without anything,” Aline Kamakian from World Central Kitchen told Newsweek.
A week before Thursday’s attack on a Michigan synagogue, the suspect’s two brothers and two of their children were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, the mayor of the Lebanese village where they lived told CNN.
