OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Monday accused newly-crowned Liberal Leader Mark Carney of trying to “distract” from how he spent his time before entering politics by focusing on U.S. President Donald Trump.

The election of Mark Carney as the leader of the Liberals and prime minister is getting mixed reviews from Indigenous members of the party.

Carney handily beat former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who won only eight percent of the Liberal leadership vote. Former House Leader Karina Gould trailed at 3.2 percent, followed by former member of parliament and Montréal-area businessman Frank Baylis, at three percent.

OTTAWA — Liberal MPs are gathering on Parliament Hill this afternoon to huddle after the party chose former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney as its new leader.

"I know these are dark days. Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust," said Carney during his victory speech at the Liberal leadership convention in Ottawa on Sunday night.
