COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina Republican Party on Monday unveiled the dates of its officially sanctioned debates in what has already become a hotly contested race to be elected the state's next governor in 2026.

State Rep. Wendell Jones, D-Greenville, has proposed the "Merit and Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Act of 2026." The bill seeks to ensure that admissions, hiring, promotions and retention in South Carolina's higher education system is "truly merit-based, transparent, and auditable."
