When you’re a baby, anything you do is cause for celebration. Steve Lafeve, who oversees the Oregon Zoo’s elephant area, said so himself when reporters flocked to the zoo Monday morning to meet Rose-Tu and her new baby.

The Oregon Zoo in Portland has welcomed a new baby elephant. Thirty-year-old Asian elephant Rose-Tu gave birth at the zoo last weekend after 20 months of pregnancy.

The Oregon Zoo has unveiled the first heartwarming images of its newborn baby elephant, a female born on Saturday, February 1. Standing on her feet just 15 minutes after birth, she weighs around 90 kilograms and appears to be in excellent health.
