Houston Police Department officers struck people with gunfire during two separate incidents Sunday — with one of them dying — marking the first two shootings in the city this year involving police. Last year, HPD officers were involved in 28 shootings, resulting in 12 deaths.

An officer shot and killed the suspect after he reportedly raised his weapon. Separate investigations are underway.

HPD officers pulled the man over at about 1:40 a.m. for a traffic violation in the block of 4700 Tidwell, HPD Assistant Chief Christy Smith said in a briefing posted on the department's X channel. During the traffic stop it was determined that the driver had a felony warrant.

The shooting occurred on Route 161 near Walnut Bend at Richmond Avenue. Police were searching for the suspected shooter as of late Wednesday afternoon.

HPD is investigating an officer-involved shooting of an armed suspect who did not comply with disarmament commands.
