Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, who oversees the jail from which 10 inmates escaped, spurring a five-day manhunt, apologized for the first time Tuesday as she faced calls to resign.

Embattled Orleans Parish Susan Hutson announced Tuesday evening (May 20) that she is “temporarily” suspending her campaign for re-election this fall. Hutson has come under withering criticism in the wake of the May 16 escape of 10 inmates from the Orleans Justice Center jail she has supervised since May 2022.

Three jail staff members have been suspended pending the investigation. The sheriff has not said if the civilian monitoring tech was one of them.
