Venezuela and Japan are battling it out in a high-scoring World Baseball Classic quarterfinal game. Japan had a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning, before Wilyer Abreu hit a 3-run home run to right field to give Venezuela a 7-5 lead.
In a tournament that has had no shortage of dynamic moments, jaw-dropping home runs and epic comebacks, Saturday’s quarterfinal between Venezuela and Japan might have topped it all. Venezuela upset Japan 8-5, knocking out the defending champions to advance to the World Baseball Classic semifinals for the first time since 2009.
After sweeping through Pool C with a 4-0 record, Japan will take on Venezuela in the quarterfinals. Shohei Ohtani and Samurai Japan are the favorites to advance, but these odds are tighter than expected at -162 odds for the chalk and +134 for the South American underdogs.
