Sue Bird, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, is filling the new role of U.S. women’s national basketball team managing director and will identify players and coaches for the 2026 FIBA World Cup in Germany and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

WNBA legend Sue Bird is the first managing director of the Team USA women’s national team, and former National Player of the Year Jimmer Fredette is the first managing director for men’s 3X3. They join TODAY to talk about their exciting new roles for the upcoming 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

"USA Basketball will announce Sue Bird as the managing director for the women's national team, a source confirmed to FOS," the X page Front Office Sports said Wednesday. "Previously, the women's team and coaching staff was named by committee —now, that will be Bird's job."
