In 1891, artist Henry Ossawa Tanner moved to Paris, France, and began focusing his work on biblical themes. It was there he was awarded a medal at the famed Paris Salon for his painting, "Resurrection of Lazarus." He is remembered for his tender African American scenes and his religious paintings. Tanner is believed to be the first full African American Academician of the National Academy of Design.
