Nothing was pre-conceived or contrived in capturing of The Clash’s London Calling album cover shot. The iconic black and white image of bass player, Paul Simonon, who is shown driving his bass guitar into the stage of the New York Palladium in 1979, was taken in the moment by photographer Pennie Smith. The image is slightly out-of-focus as the photgraph was taken while backing away to avoid being hit by the unusually frustrated Simonon. | The Sound
