Every early March, the Iditarod officially begins right here in Willow, Alaska. But this trail carries a story far older than the race itself. In 1925, during the deadly diphtheria outbreak in Nome, teams of mushers and sled dogs relayed lifesaving serum nearly 700 miles across Alaska in what became known as the Great Race of Mercy.
