Albert Gene Collins, known as Albert Collins or the "Iceman," was born on October 1, 1932, in Leona, Texas, to a sharecropping family. He was exposed to music early through his cousin, the legendary blues guitarist Lightnin’ Hopkins, who played at family gatherings. The family moved to Marquez, Texas, in 1938, and then to Houston in 1941, settling in the city’s Third Ward, a predominantly Black neighborhood. There, Collins attended Jack Yates High School.
