Meet the only native caper plant in the Hawaiian Islands, the maiapilo. This delicate flower opens in the toughest of landscapes—the hot, dry lava fields of leeward Hawaiʻi. This plant was used medicinally on bone breaks in pre-contact Hawaiʻi. The flowers open after sunset, when it cools down, and remain open until dawn and the oncoming heat of the day.
